Titanium Rings The mention of Titanium immediately brings to mind airplanes. The strong bodies of airplanes that fly 3200 feet in the air are made of alloys of titanium. The reason titanium was chosen for this purpose is that it is a very strong metal. In addition to its remarkable strength, titanium has a relatively low density compared to metals like iron. The low density allows it to be very light weighted and therefore an ideal material for aerodynamic structures like airplanes.
Another important property of titanium is its tolerance for corrosion. Metals like iron, copper and aluminum all react with air over time. This corrosion makes the metals weak and as a result unable to fulfill its purpose. Titanium however is less prone to corrosion. This property makes titanium the perfect metal for use in marine structures, like ships and submarines. Since titanium is an expensive metal, alloys of titanium are used to build ships and submarines. The metals that titanium is alloyed with depend on what parts of the vehicle they will be used in.
However, since very recently, titanium has been used in a whole different industry. An increasing number of shops now sell titanium rings. Although mainly
worn by men, titanium rings are not limited to males. There are many types of titanium rings that are designed for the female taste. Titanium rings start at about $150US and go up to very much higher prices for designer brands. Not just a fashion statement, people are now using titanium rings as wedding bands. Yes!! They come with engravings and elegant designs especially for the purpose of wedding bands.
Here again titanium compounds are used to produce different colors. Titanium phosphide is a grey color whereas titanium oxide has a rich black color. Titanium rings are available in both these colors. The black titanium rings appeal to people who like to stand out whereas the grey rings are less distinctive and have a similar appearance to silver or white gold. Other metals such as gold and silver are also used together with titanium to produce the various designs. While plain metals may be used to produce titanium rings with masculine designs, precious stones such as diamonds, rubies etc are embedded into titanium rings for women. Although a new trend, titanium rings are catching on fast and may create a whole new industry that uses the metal, besides the aircraft and marine industries.
